Brocade (NASDAQ: BRCD) today announced the appointment of David Meyer, Brocade Service Provider CTO and Chief Scientist, as the chair of the OpenDaylight Project Technical Steering Committee (TSC). Meyer’s election reinforces the Brocade commitment to the OpenDaylight Project, as well as the industry initiative to accelerate customer adoption of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technologies.
OpenDaylight, a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project, unites industry leaders with the goal of a common and open SDN platform for developers to utilize, contribute to and build commercial products and technologies. Providing the technical leadership for OpenDaylight, the TSC will oversee the integration of best of breed technology, inter-collaboration across all OpenDaylight projects to ensure release quality and the establishment of best practices. Additionally, the TSC will specify and coordinate the release dates for OpenDaylight project code.
“We envision the OpenDaylight Project being comprised of numerous projects, all of which will be focused on different aspects of software-defined networking, and the Technical Steering Committee will be responsible for providing direction and guidance,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. “I’d like to congratulate David on his appointment as the chairman of the Technical Steering Committee and I believe his industry and academia background will prove beneficial to OpenDaylight.”
At Brocade, Meyer is responsible for working with tier-1 service providers, cloud hosting providers and Web 2.0 content providers worldwide to develop cloud-optimized network architectures that support next-generation technologies and services, such as SDN, cloud computing and network virtualization.
“David’s daily interactions with customers and diverse technology expertise will be a strong asset for OpenDaylight as he can provide guidance from the customers’ perspective to ensure the code is properly built for use in real-world environments,” said Greig Guy, Country Manager Australia and New Zealand at Brocade. “Additionally, his experience and leadership within a number of industry organizations will bring tremendous value to OpenDaylight and the Technical Steering Committee.”
In addition to his roles with Brocade and OpenDaylight, Meyer is also an active participant within a number of industry associations, including the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the North American Network Operators’ Group (NANOG), RIPE Réseaux IP Européens, APRICOTand the Open Networking Foundation (ONF).
