Brocade® (Nasdaq: BRCD) today announced that Christchurch City has deployed one of New Zealand’s first major metropolitan local area networks (LAN) offering businesses, schools and health organisations affordable optical fibre connections.
Constructed by optical fibre networking company Enable Networks, the 130km long optical fibre network uses Brocade Ethernet switching technology and is already available to more than half of Christchurch’s businesses. It is expected that by 2011 most commercial buildings, schools and health locations will be able to connect to the Enable Networks optical fibre network.
The Christchurch network operates on an “open access” basis, enabling any IT or communications company to deliver their services to Christchurch businesses over the optical fibre network.
Commenting on the deployment, Mat Watkins, Operations Manager of Enable Networks, said: “Using Brocade LAN technology, Enable has created a network that will deliver all the benefits of high-speed broadband to public and private sector organisations throughout Christchurch and accelerate business broadband speeds by up to 400 times.”
According to Graham Schultz, country manager for Australia and New Zealand, the deployment in Christchurch by Enable Networks is the first of several major engagements that Brocade is working on and reflects the burgeoning network market in New Zealand.

It seems organisations are shaking off the impact of the global financial crisis and the recent announcement by the government of its $1.5 billion ultra-fast broadband investment initiative will undoubtedly result in considerable market growth,” said Mr Schultz.
